A Himalayan oil you have almost certainly never used. Dhatelo Oil is pressed from the seeds of Prinsepia utilis, a thorny shrub that grows on Himalayan slopes between roughly 1,500 and 3,000 meters, and it is pure dhatelo seed oil — no carrier, no filler, no blend. What's in the bottle is what came off the press.

In Nepal and the Indian Himalaya the shrub goes by dhatelo, bhekal, and a dozen other local names, and its oil has been pressed in village mills for generations — rubbed into skin through cold months and into aching shoulders and knees after long days. It has never been farmed at scale, which is most of the reason you won't find it on a shelf.

WHAT IT'S LIKE
Pale greenish-gold and medium-bodied, with a green, faintly grassy smell. Rich going on, but it settles in without a heavy film.

BEST FOR
Dry, cold-weather skin. Hands and feet. A slow massage into shoulders, knees, and the small of your back.

HOW TO USE
Warm a dropperful between your palms and massage into wherever feels tight, after a shower or before bed. On the face, two or three drops at night for skin that runs dry.

WHAT'S IN IT
Prinsepia Utilis Seed Oil. That's the whole list.

Patch test before first use. Keep away from eyes. For external use only.

Himalayan slopes, 1,500–3,000 m

A thorny shrub with a dozen names.

Prinsepia utilis grows on Himalayan hillsides between roughly 1,500 and 3,000 metres — a scrambling, thorn-covered shrub called dhatelo in some valleys, bhekal in others, and something else again a day's walk away. Its seeds have been pressed in village mills in Nepal and the Indian Himalaya for generations. It has never been farmed at scale, which is the entire reason you've never seen it on a shelf.

Genuinely obscure

Almost nobody outside the Himalaya presses it, and almost nobody outside it sells it.

Village mills, not refineries

A small, local supply chain rather than an industrial one. The scale is the limit.

Made for cold and for hands

Medium-bodied and slow to absorb — the sort of oil you work into skin rather than pat on.

What we don't know

There's no research to point you at.

Dhatelo has almost no cosmetic literature behind it. No trials worth citing, no fatty-acid spec sheet doing the rounds of the industry, no polished origin story that a marketing department spent a decade shaping.

What exists is practice. Oil pressed in village mills and worked into skin through Himalayan winters, and into shoulders and knees at the end of long days on steep ground. That's what we can honestly tell you about it.

We're not going to invent the rest. If you want an oil with a body of evidence behind it, buy the argan — it's cheaper and better studied. Buy this one because almost nobody has tried it.

What's in it

Prinsepia Utilis Seed Oil.

One ingredient, undiluted — the same oil whether you buy it here or in the Himalaya Collection. Patch test before first use. Not a treatment for any medical condition. Keep away from eyes. For external use only.
